In TROY's general music program, you'll explore the development of Western music from its early roots to today while building essential skills in areas like sight-singing and rhythmic reading through courses such as Aural Skills I and II. Mark J Walker, Ed.D

Dr. Walker serves as Director of Bands and Professor of Music at 麻豆网站列表 where he conducts the 麻豆网站列表 Symphony Band, the nationally renowned 鈥淪ound of the South鈥� Marching Band, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, marching band techniques, measurement and evaluation, and wind literature.

Michael Huff, D.M.A.

Dr. Michael Huff serves as Professor of Music at 麻豆网站列表 where he teaches trumpet, brass methods and works with the band program. Dr. Huff has earned degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the Eastman School of Music and the Catholic University of America. He has studied trumpet with Charles Daval, Langston Fitzgerald, Barbara Butler, Charles Geyer and Walter Chesnut.

Timothy Phillips, D.M.A.

Timothy Phillips is Professor of Clarinet at the John M. Long School of Music at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. Since joining the 麻豆网站列表 faculty in 2006, he founded 麻豆网站列表 Clarinet Day, which brings high school, college, and professional clarinetists together each spring at the John M. Long School of Music for performances and master classes.

Do I need to audition to pursue a bachelor's degree in music at TROY?

Yes. At TROY, our music performance degree students must audition as part of the admissions process. Audition requirements will vary by instrument and specialization. Learn more about auditions. 

Can I double major in music and another degree path?

Yes, you have the option to double major in other areas, including education, which is especially important if you want to pursue music teacher jobs. By majoring in both general music and education, you'll gain the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to effectively teach music in any classroom setting. However, if teaching isn't your goal, a double major in fields like business, marketing or technology can provide valuable skills to help you succeed in music industry careers or other paths where a strong foundation in music theory and performance is essential.

What's the difference between a general music major and a music performance degree?

At TROY, the B.A. in Music provides a strong foundation in music theory, history and performance while allowing you to pursue additional academic interests. Unlike the music performance degree, which centers on intensive training in a single instrument or voice with a focus on recitals and ensemble work, the B.A. in Music offers more flexibility. You'll have room in your schedule to double major or minor in another field 鈥� for example, music and global business. Kim is a music educator who has taught in the Aldine Independent School District in Houston, Texas, for two decades.

TROY alumna earns Houston Symphony's award for excellence in music education

Eun Sung Kim, a 2005 music education graduate, received the Houston Symphony's Spec Charitable Foundation Award for Excellence in Music Education. She was honored during the symphony's annual Salute to Educators performance on March 29. Kim is a strings teacher and Magnet Coordinator for Carter Academy , which is part of the Aldine Independent School District (ISD) in Houston, Texas. Kim, who has spent her entire career teaching in the Aldine ISD, said the recognition means the world to her personally, but not for the reasons people might expect.
