From Script to Spotlight — A Broad-Based Theatre Major

As a communication arts major focused on theatre at TROY, you'll join a learning community designed to support your success. Focused on Twyla Tharp's book The Creative Habit, this unique community helps you explore strategies for excelling in your theatre studies. You'll also have opportunities to take part in exciting live performances, from Shakespearean classics to high-energy musicals, giving you the experience to succeed in jobs for theatre majors.

Tori Lee Averett

Tori Lee Averett

Tori Lee Averett brings a strong and committed voice for collaboration and integration of different ideas, people, and groups in and through the arts, education, and community. She holds the B.M.E. and M.S. in Vocal/Choral Music Education and the B.S. in Theatre from Âé¶¹ÍøÕ¾Áбí, and she holds the M.F.A. in Playwriting and Poetry from Georgia College. Tori is an accomplished performer, director, choreographer, writer, musician, and teacher.
Quinton Cockrell

Quinton Cockrell

Quinton Cockrell is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and The Alabama Shakespeare Festival's Professional Actor Training Program. Quinton has worked with numerous theatres throughout the United States as an actor, director, and playwright, including Riverside Shakespeare Company, Westbeth Theatre, Soho Rep, The John Houseman Theatre, Playwright's Horizons, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Studio Arena Theatre, Heritage Repertory Company, Birmingham Children's Theatre, City Equity Theatre, The Barter Theatre, and Red Mountain Theatre Company.
Jenny Davis Meadows

Jenny Davis Meadows

As a theatre education instructor, Jenny is committed to teaching engaging, creative lessons that ensure preservice teachers leave TROY with a repertoire of skills and resources so that they can enjoy success in the classroom. She has over 10 years experience teaching and working with children in the Arts in various settings. Jenny graduated from Âé¶¹ÍøÕ¾Áбí with a B.S. in Theatre and a Master's Degree in Education.
Tommy Newman

Tommy Newman

Tommy Newman is a published playwright, composer and lyricist from Alabama and a 2013 ASCAP Foundation Cole Porter Award Winner. Three of his shows have participated in the annual NAMT Festival in New York. He is a recipient of an Anna Sosenko Assist Trust Grant, and a 2014 Kennedy Center ACTF National Musical Theatre Award Winner.

What's the best degree option to teach theatre?

Consider a at TROY, which prepares you to teach theatre in K-12 school settings. With this degree choice, you'll gain a broad-based theatre background, receive ample hands-on experiences and learn how to teach theatre to aspiring professionals.

Does TROY offer an acting major?

We don't call it an acting major at TROY, but our communication arts major with a theatre track gives you a well-rounded theatre education. You'll not only learn about performance techniques and theatre history, but you'll also have the chance to pursue courses such as Fundamentals of Acting and Acting I. Within our acting courses, you'll learn relaxation, concentration, movement and characterization — skills that will add depth to your arsenal of performance talents. 

Is theatre a good major in general?

Yes, theatre is a good major, especially if your dream is to work in the industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in acting and theatre production will grow about 5% through 2033. While competition is stiff for performance roles, there are many off-stage career opportunities for those with a theatre degree. These career options can include production and design, directing and writing, technical and digital arts, arts administration or education. The skills you learn as a theatre major, such as communication, problem solving and critical thinking, are also highly valuable to other career paths

Is theatre a good major for a behind-the-scenes production career?

A theatre major is a great choice if you want to work offstage. At TROY, we offer coursework and hands-on preparation in technical theatre, stage management, stage design and more. If you're interested in working in film, television or live event production, consider a double major in theatre and multimedia journalism or hospitality, tourism and event management.
